Non-governmental human rights grievance mechanisms

Abstract: The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights recognize the need for rightsholders whose rights have been violated by corporate action to have access to remedies. One kind of system for providing these remedies includes no government action or oversight. The three main types of these non-governmental human rights grievance mechanisms are run by (1) multistakeholder initiatives, (2) development finance institutions, and (3) companies, either company-wide or at a particular operation in its supply chain. Examples of each of these systems are identified and discussed.
