Chapter 25 in Teaching Business and Human Rights, 2023, pp 356-367 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Engineering for human rights is an ethical, research, and pedagogical paradigm that has emerged synergistically with the broader business and human rights field since the early 2000s. This chapter draws on the experience of professors at the University of Connecticut who lay out key principles central to the paradigm (i.e., distributive justice, participation, consideration of duty bearers, accountability, and indivisibility). It details varied pedagogical approaches for conveying core concepts while also shoring up related skills of undergraduate students across multiple disciplines (e.g., engineering, social sciences, and humanities) whose experience of learning together serves as a gateway to diverse professional experience.
