Chapter 1 in Rethinking Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, 2025, pp 1-12 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This book examines the fields of entrepreneurship and regional development at a time when, across the world, we face issues that call for fresh thinking, or ‘rethinking’. The accelerating climate crisis, a global pandemic, and regional conflicts have thrown up unprecedented challenges for researchers and policymakers encompassing the spheres of regional development and entrepreneurship, and indeed much more. Throughout this book, the authors draw broadly on theoretical perspectives located within different disciplines and fields of study that they are familiar with, in the spirit of transdisciplinarity, where, in the end, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. In this chapter, they provide a brief introduction to the fields of entrepreneurship and regional development, where their goal is to unite these through the practice of rethinking. This is followed by an overview of the topics in this book, selected precisely to provoke some rethinking amongst readers interested in these areas of research. Topics featured in this book include the importance of context, the challenges of inequality and inclusivity, the role of universities, the part played by ecosystems and incubators, and the centrality of entrepreneurial learning. Finally, policy for entrepreneurship and regional development is revisited and critically examined, drawing extensively on the authors’ experience as engaged academics at the research–policy interface.
