Abstract:
In this chapter, the authors provide a consideration of the concept of context in entrepreneurship and regional development. As scholars, they come from the closely related but distinct fields of entrepreneurship, economic geography and innovation. They all agree, however, that context cannot be ignored. Context refers to factors and conditions that influence the emergence, behaviour and performance of entrepreneurship in different places and times. Context can include aspects such as culture, history, institutions, policies, infrastructure, networks, markets, demographics, geography and environment. Furthermore, they find that context is the concept that transcends their diverse disciplinary backgrounds and perspectives, bringing them together with a shared passion for understanding how entrepreneurship and regional development relate to one another and to context.
