Chapter 3 in Rethinking Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, 2025, pp 27-43 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter, the authors explore intersections between entrepreneurship, regional development and context in relation to inequalities and issues of inclusivity. They explore aspects of inequalities in terms of geography, gender and ethnicity. They challenge the gendered assumptions about what counts as entrepreneurship, its purpose and practice, and who is acknowledged as an entrepreneur. They call for more inclusive forms of knowledge, theoretical and pedagogical, to inform the rethinking of entrepreneurship and regional development. They reflect on the assumptions underpinning what counts as knowledge, its creation and dissemination, drawing on the concept of voice. Who has a voice is both constituted and constrained by context. They encourage a broader understanding of ways in which regional development might be planned and measured, questioning current assumptions underpinning policy development and planning.
