Comparative research on health and health care

Claus Wendt

Chapter 4 in Social Policy in Changing European Societies, 2022, pp 50-65 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Early health policy and healthcare system research was for long dominated by single-case studies, but is now increasingly based on international comparisons. This chapter provides an overview of how healthcare and health research have evolved over the past 20 years and assesses the potential for innovative research in this field for the future. Focus is on comparative research. Several advances in research are identified. The convergence in research goals, methods, and use of quality criteria in comparative health care research is one example. Another is the new focus on institutional change and its consequences for population health. Areas for innovation in comparative research include the assessment of best practises in period of harsh fiscal constraints, the relationship between health care and broader welfare state structures, as well as utilization and consequences of digitalization in the delivery of care.
