Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of early developments in environmental accountability and critical accounting formations. The chapter aims to shed light on humanity's under-elaborated background (ontological) pictures of the world. This involves objectively understanding our place in Nature, the cosmos and the world. Recent environmental work in ethical theory focuses on our engaged agency as pointing beyond itself to how our reasoning stays in harmony with what seems to be outside the mind. This can be seen as a particularly effective quality of human thought in coping with ‘the world’.
