Measuring the spatial equity of transport systems: emerging data opportunities
Elizabeth Delmelle
Chapter 2 in A Research Agenda for Transport Equity and Mobility Justice, 2024, pp 31-46 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Transportation equity, or the fair distribution of transport’s opportunities and consequences, can be evaluated using a variety of quantitative metrics. These techniques often rely on the calculation of accessibility, or the ease of reaching either a set of opportunities or the transport system itself, and a subsequent assessment of the spatial distribution of access, according to an indicator of disadvantage or population subgroup. Recent advancements in this body of research have capitalized on new data sources that have improved the spatial and temporal resolution of accessibility estimates and have incorporated other considerations beyond travel time such as monetary costs or crowding on transit systems. This chapter reviews some of the recent and emerging data sources for evaluating the spatial equity of transportation systems and identifies limitations and areas for future research.
