Introduction to the Handbook of Research on Base of the Pyramid Entrepreneurship: premise and structure

Miguel Rivera-Santos and Carlos Rufín

Chapter 1 in Handbook of Research on Base of the Pyramid Entrepreneurship, 2026, pp 1-9 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This introductory chapter sets the stage for the Handbook's exploration of entrepreneurship at the base of the pyramid (BoP), a field that has evolved significantly since its emergence over two decades ago. We outline the unique characteristics of BoP entrepreneurship, including the profile of BoP entrepreneurs, the diversity of actors active at the BoP, the complexity of BoP contexts, and the innovative business models that arise in those contexts. We highlight how BoP entrepreneurship presents a unique opportunity to challenge and enrich mainstream entrepreneurship theory and methodology, and management more generally. This introductory chapter also presents the structure of the Handbook, which is organized into three parts – (I) Understanding the Field: Theoretical and Empirical Perspectives, (II) Delving into the Setting: The BoP Context for Entrepreneurs and Its Varieties, and (III) Emerging Issues in BoP Entrepreneurship – and introduces each chapter one by one.
