Chapter 2 in Handbook of Research on Base of the Pyramid Entrepreneurship, 2026, pp 11-43 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter provides an interdisciplinary review of the literature on entrepreneurship at the base of the pyramid (BoP), a field that spans management and development studies, among others. It synthesizes findings from 138 peer-reviewed articles from top journals published between 2010 and 2024, highlighting the diversity of BoP entrepreneurs, the types of entrepreneurial ventures they pursue, the complexity of their contexts, and the roles of various actors such as nonprofits (non-governmental organizations), governments, and microfinance institutions. The review identifies key themes, theoretical frameworks, and methodological approaches, and underscores the need for systemic, rather than dyadic, analyses of BoP entrepreneurship. The chapter aims to bridge disciplinary silos and encourage richer, more inclusive scholarship on BoP entrepreneurship that can inform theory and research methods beyond its scholarly focus.
