Leveraging context to build theory about BOP entrepreneurship

Abstract:
Publishing work on BOP entrepreneurship is challenging due to its differences from the traditional entrepreneurial activities studied in literature – such as innovation in the Global North. These differences make it challenging to join existing scholarly conversations and make clear theoretical contributions. Yet, publishing robust theory on BOP entrepreneurship is achievable. I propose a framework showing a ‘problematization’ approach, which positions BOP entrepreneurship as ‘similar but different’ to more widely studied forms of entrepreneurship. I suggest anchoring on phenomenological similarities – such as qualities of the entrepreneur, venture, or entrepreneurial process – and problematizing a gap based on contextual differences. These differences should highlight specific shortcomings in existing theory, such as inaccurate assumptions, transgressed boundary conditions, problematic predictions, or increased salience. Balancing these aspects can lead to robust theoretical contributions that can help explain and predict the nuances of BOP entrepreneurship, and inform policy and practice.
