The global workforce in Asia

Chapter 5 in Elgar Companion to Managing People Across the Asia-Pacific, 2023, pp 93-110 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Given the increasing demand for a diverse workforce, the role of people who are living and working abroad (expatriates) has become of utmost significance for international firms all over the world. However, the literature on expatriates has failed to examine the main issues and opportunities of global talents when they carry out assignments in the Asia-Pacific region. Drawing on the relevant literature, the authors suggest that the main opportunities for expatriates working in Asia are related to: (i) their career development; (ii) their development of social networks; (iii) their development of capabilities and knowledge transfer; and (iv) their compensation and benefits. The authors’ review of the literature on expatriates also reveals that (i) emotional challenges; (ii) work-life balance; and (iii) language barriers, communication issues, and cultural differences between home and host country are the main challenges of expatriates on international assignments in the Asia-Pacific region. The authors also highlight some research directions for future studies.
