Chapter 1 in Handbook on Inequality and Social Capital, 2024, pp 1-8 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Social capital - resources embedded within interpersonal relationships - is central to explanations of social inequality, aiding our understanding of the uneven distribution of opportunities and outcomes across people and communities. This chapter orients readers to the tradition of research on social capital and inequality, pointing to the expansive history of interdisciplinary research that has drawn on the social capital metaphor to explain unequal social outcomes. The chapter also outlines the sections of the Handbook: (1) theoretical and methodological developments, (2) social capital as community, and (3) social capital as instrumental resource.
