Abstract:
When farmers, through cooperatives, enter the chain at another stage, it is a form of vertical integration. Farmer governance along the supply chain involves making decisions on the resource allocation in the supply chain while navigating property rights issues (e.g., Cook 1995, Cook 2018). Many marketing cooperatives have significant market share, but not dominance. However, the recent consolidation of cooperatives and increasing extent in the supply and value chain suggests that farmers prefer more control over the supply and value chains. In addition, the stability of the cooperative market share indicates that farmer governance is still critical and efficient to coordinate the chains.
