Abstract:
Through its co-operatives, which process most of the milk supply in Ireland, the Irish dairy industry has achieved a significant degree of vertical integration with its farmer members. Capitalising on Ireland’s natural competitive advantages has been a key feature of the national and international supply chain for dairy, ingredients and nutrition. Four co-operative cases within the sector are discussed in this chapter and show how governance of dairy supply chains in Ireland has typically remained close to milk producers, serving a wide range of farm production needs. EU agriculture and climate policy also remain to the fore in the sector. Recent restructuring in one of the four cases has enabled it to re-mutualise into a traditional-looking co-operative structure like the other Irish dairy co-operatives reflecting a desire by farmers to take greater control of the future direction of the Irish dairy industry.
