Mutuals

James M. White

Chapter 30 in Handbook of Research on Cooperatives and Mutuals, 2023, pp 494-516 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the many different ways in which people of a given community help each other through adversity. After a brief discussion of the evolution of mutual aid in general, the chapter discusses the evolution two types of organizations, fraternal benefit societies and township mutual fire insurance companies, and the ways in which they have (1) embodied the principles of mutual aid, (2) defied standard economic assumptions about insurance providers, and (3) promoted, however incompletely and imperfectly, the causes of social justice. These organizations are also analyzed in the context of the industry life cycle, which is the basis for discussing their future evolution.
