Cooperative business structures: access to capital via equity and credit
Christopher J. Kopka
Chapter 5 in Handbook of Research on Cooperatives and Mutuals, 2023, pp 100-114 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapter describes how cooperatives access capital using credit and equity. The discussion is presented in a review of cooperative principles and how the law helped inform cooperative stakeholders about actual business practices. A broad historical framework of capital and the evolution of alternative cooperative legal structures that were developed in response to the issue of equity capital scarcity is described. Future research directions regarding cooperative principles and business practices are summarized and discussed.
