A decade of tracking women's participation in the governance of international sport federations

Johanna A. Adriaanse

Chapter 1 in Research Handbook on Gender and Diversity in Sport Management, 2024, pp 21-36 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The purpose of the chapter is to investigate gender diversity in the governance of International Sport Federations (IFs) from 2012 to 2021. Central to the study is critical mass theory. I conducted an audit on the number of women within total board members, the gender of the president and the gender of the secretary general on boards of 70 IFs at three points in time, in 2012, 2016 and 2021. The average of women’s participation in 2021 as director on IF boards increased to 21.3%, as president to 8.6% and as secretary general to 24.3%. Only 18 of the 70 IFs had achieved a critical mass of women directors with only two of the 18 attaining gender balance. Not only do 52 IFs fail to adhere to democratic or ethical business practices because some stakeholders are underrepresented, but it is also likely that their organization’s performance is compromised.
