Poststructuralist feminist approaches in sport management research

Abstract: Because of their explicit focus on relations of power-knowledge and mechanisms of social reproduction and change, poststructuralist approaches have been widely embraced by feminist sport scholars to advance understandings of gendered relations and how these are both reproduced and disrupted through sporting participation. The purpose and scope of this chapter is (a) to provide an overview of some key poststructuralist approaches and how these have been taken up to date to examine gender relations in various sporting contexts and (b) to articulate what these approaches have to offer in terms of enhancing the understanding of and ability to respond to gender and diversity issues in the field of sport management in particular. This chapter draws primarily on example studies from the fields of sport sociology and sport coaching to illustrate some hypothetical ways poststructuralist approaches could be taken up by researchers to explore gender relations in sport management contexts.
