Institutional heteronormativity in Dutch sport clubs

Abstract: This study examines how board members, coaches, confidential advisors, and club members construct an institutional context regarding the expression of heteronormativity in their clubs. It shows the perspectives of those who significantly construct a heteronormative culture: the majority of heterosexual and cisgender athletes, board members, coaches, and confidential advisors. The empirical data in this study were collected through interviews. The chapter is written from a queer theoretical perspective, which means sexuality is seen as a social construct, and not as an essential characteristic. The data revealed that interviewees presented their club as open to everyone. A lack of reflexivity towards institutional heteronormativity within the club not only characterized board members, but was intertwined with the culture of the club. Different forms of discrimination used by club members can be seen as a form of incivility. The results suggested that such heteronormativity counteracts basic sport values, such as safety and inclusion of all athletes.
