Abstract: There has been little study of money within complex migrant households. Literature about intra-household resources has focused on nuclear households within state boundaries. Literature on migrants emphasises the scale of the effects of international remittances on recipient households in low- and middle-income countries. The management and control of money within the migrant household have seldom been the focus. This case study of Indian parent-migrants in Australia is of migrant households that become complex because of parents’ follow-on migration. It outlines the emergence of the ‘upside-down joint family household’ and the economic dependence of the parent-migrants caused primarily by migration. Moralities of joint family money in India collide with the morality of sharing money within couples in Australian family law. This study of parent-migrants addresses gaps in the literature relating to migration, money and complex households, and points to new directions for research on the management and control of intra-household resources.
