Healthcare and elderly care in Europe: an introduction

.

Chapter 1 in Healthcare and Elderly Care in Europe, 2023, pp 1-8 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The coordination of healthcare and long-term care for the elderly is a major challenge for all welfare states facing population ageing and shortage of staff in health and social services. When growing old, people often need both healthcare and long-term care. The coordination of healthcare and long-term care is essential for improving the living conditions of an increasing elderly population. Success in this respect depends on effective institutional regulations, adequate financing, and the cooperation of different organizations and occupations working in the field. The book analyses these conditions in four European welfare states with different healthcare and long-term care systems: Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland.
