 Professional-level problems: staff shortage, divided responsibilities, or missing communication?. Chapter 8 in Healthcare and Elderly Care in Europe, 2023, pp 101-121 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: The chapter analyses the challenges, obstacles and solutions for better coordination among occupations and professions working in the fields of healthcare and long-term care in cross-national perspective in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. The analysis is based on interviews with major stakeholder organizations in the four countries. In all countries, the shortage of staff is a major obstacle for better coordination between the two systems. This problem is essential, because cooperation needs work and time. Beyond numbers, however, communication and professional education are crucial elements for better coordination, too. Digital communication tools need to be further advanced. Education and qualification for long-term care workers lags behind the healthcare workforce. Countries differ with respect to the academization and professionalization of long-term care workers, but in all countries further professionalization seems to be crucial for a better cooperation with healthcare personnel.
