Chapter 3 in Teaching International Law, 2024, pp 60-80 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter addresses pedagogical approaches to teaching international law. Case studies, often paired with the Socratic Method, are staples of legal pedagogy. These come primarily in two forms: decisions of national/international courts and real/hypothetical events or problems that raise legal issues, respectively. This chapter examines these approaches as well as alternatives including conventional lectures, active learning exercises, and other approaches. The purposes, advantages, and disadvantages of the different approaches are discussed as is the importance of context in choosing among them.
