Chapter 18 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Migration and Asylum Law, 2025, pp 104-109 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The digitalization of migration has intensified in recent decades. Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics are increasingly used throughout the migration cycle. Such technologies can streamline repetitive tasks, fast-track identity verification, and facilitate border management and control. However, they can also create additional administrative hurdles and restrict migration when, for instance, errors and bias in the design and development of these technologies lead to inaccurate predictions or the misidentification of individuals. Accordingly, this entry provides an overview of the critical issues, opportunities, and challenges regarding the uses of digital technologies in the migration context, offering a reference guide in an area of growing interest worldwide.
