European Union
Philippe De Bruycker
Chapter 23 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Migration and Asylum Law, 2025, pp 132-137 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
European Union (EU) migration and asylum policies go back to the Schengen Convention (1990) that abolished internal borders controls. The priorities of the EU are to fight illegal migration through visas, borders, return policies, and databases. Externalization towards third countries of transit requested to prevent illegal migrants to move to the EU became the main line of this policy. While the EU has the high ambition to build a Common European Asylum System, policies on legal migration and integration are less developed. Solidarity between member states and the building of quasi-federal agencies are among the future challenges.
