Chapter 38 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Migration and Asylum Law, 2025, pp 221-227 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The concept of integrated border management (IBM) describes how improved regulatory efficiency and effectiveness can be realized through greater coordination between border authorities during policy elaboration and operational activities at the national and international levels. The IBM aims to establish national and international coordination and cooperation among all relevant authorities and agencies involved in border control and trade facilitation activities to achieve effective, efficient, and coordinated border management. At the same time, all the actors involved in border management should ensure the respect of the rule of law and the human rights of people crossing international borders. This implies a complex balancing act.
