Migrant Women
Christel Querton
Chapter 53 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Migration and Asylum Law, 2025, pp 313-318 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Migration is a deeply gendered phenomenon. Women and men experience all stages of migration differently and women face gender discrimination in every aspect of migration. Therefore, this encyclopaedic entry provides an overview of the issues facing migrant women within migration governance frameworks, as refugees, migrant workers, and family members. It reviews historical and contemporary challenges, including gaps within existing legal frameworks, problems of legal interpretation and practical implementation at the domestic level, and inconsistent application and interpretation of international human rights law in the cases of migrant women. Finally, the entry identifies areas needing further research, areas not traditionally considered to be concerned with gender.
