Mixed Migration

Marina Sharpe

Chapter 59 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Migration and Asylum Law, 2025, pp 348-351 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: ‘Mixed migration’ describes the phenomenon in which a group of individuals travelling together or alongside each other across borders is composed of migrants in distinct (and sometimes overlapping) legal categories. There is also a second conceptualization of the term, focused on both the mixed composition of migratory flows and the fact that some individuals within such flows may have multiple reasons for moving. This entry describes the origins of these conceptualizations of ‘mixed migration’ and argues for one consistent usage of the term by all migration actors, in line with the version that relates solely to the mixed composition of migratory flows.
