Naturalization

Chapter 62 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Migration and Asylum Law, 2025, pp 362-367 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This entry provides a concise overview on the subject of naturalization. The meaning of the term ‘naturalization’ itself is investigated by tracing the historical origins of this way of acquiring nationality. States enjoy wide discretion when determining the conditions for naturalization. However, some common conditions that frequently occur in national legislation have been identified. The limits that can be derived from international and European Union law with respect to freedom in this area are then examined in a problematic key.
