Protection beyond refuge: expanding on the need for an intersectional approach to Syrian refugees social protection in Jordan

Abstract: This chapter explores the imperative for an intersectional approach to social protection for Syrian refugees in Jordan. Recognising that social dynamics are fluid and evolve over time, the study advocates for flexible and adaptable social protection measures capable of responding to changing circumstances and emerging intersections of vulnerability - particularly for sub-groups within the Syrian refugee community in the country. This approach enables targeted interventions for specific sub-groups for Syrian refugees, ensuring that social protection programmes are not only reaching those in greatest need but are also tailored to be gender-sensitive, inclusive of different abilities, and considerate of other intersectional factors. Through qualitative fieldwork carried out with more than 15 Jordanian experts working in the health, gender, and humanitarian spaces, the chapter advocates for more ‘sensitivity’ in policy implementation, underscoring the necessity of engaging directly with communities and refugee-led organisations.
