Abstract: The Bloomsbury SET programme is a translational research and knowledge exchange platform funded by Research England's Connecting Capability Fund, involving four universities and one university network that operate near Bloomsbury Square in London. The core of the B-SET programme resulted from a scientifically proven, robust research problem with real-life, economic, health policy and societal implications. The programme was designed to connect place, people, businesses, ideas, and infrastructures in generating innovative tools and solutions for tackling infectious diseases and increasing resistance to antimicrobials. The B-SET case study describes how a consortium composed of professional research managers and academic researchers from a wide range of disciplines pooled their expertise and experience in managing the research process. The author analyses the different stages in a programme that involved issuing calls for multidisciplinary proposals, selecting projects, guiding project teams, and evaluating their contribution to Research England's initiative, while drawing lessons for future project research managers.
