Chapter 6 in Concise Introduction to Relational Economic Geography, 2026, pp 68-81 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Firms are not homogenous organizations. They pursue different strategies, draw on different resources, have different functions in their markets, vary in terms of the degree of specialization and their integration in a social division of labor, and have different sizes, locations and spatial organization. Depending on their size, resource access and competitiveness, they may exercise considerable market power and have a different market reach. All these criteria affect firms’ growth potential and their impact on regional development. This chapter discusses important factors and conditions that influence the organization and spatial form of firms.
