Chapter 8 in Concise Introduction to Relational Economic Geography, 2026, pp 95-107 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
States are territorially defined jurisdictions that shape the institutional contexts for all forms of economic activity and are therefore constitutive building blocks underlying the relational economy. States play a dual role in the economy: They shape the institutional framework for economic action and participate as economic actors themselves. The organization and behavior of states thus have an important impact on economic geographies at different spatial scales. This chapter particularly outlines the role of national states, the way they change over time and the varieties of state forms, each accompanied by distinct economic consequences.
