Tourism and ecological footprint in Jamaica

Abstract: In Jamaica, the tourism sector is viewed as one the most important drivers of economic growth. Yet, this sector could also have a negative impact on the country’s ecological footprint. This impact could in turn have a deleterious impact on this country’s longer term economic growth prospects. In this study, we assess, within a causal long run equilibrium framework, the dynamics of the relationship between tourism (per capita constant receipts) and ecological footprint in Jamaica for the period 1980 to 2018. We apply cointegration testing alongside error correction modelling and impulse response analysis. There are two central findings. First, tourism and ecological footprint are bound within a long run cointegrating framework. Second, an increase in tourism receipts is associated with an increase in ecological footprint in the long run.
