Dancing between theory and data: abductive reasoning

Abstract: Deduction and induction have been the preferred approaches in information systems research. Although much less explored, abduction offers a more nuanced and realistic account of the typically messy theorising process involved in research. Founded on Peirce’s pragmatism, abduction solves the tension between discovery and justification. This chapter explains the philosophical foundations of abductive inference, offers methodological guidelines for abductive thinking and shows abduction in information systems research. The chapter concludes with an invitation to capitalise on the unique opportunities abductive reasoning affords for developing new ideas in information systems.
