Consegne Etiche: the ethical platform for food delivery

Abstract: Platform-based gig economy exacerbates long term-trends of non-standard work diffusion and labour market insecurity. Riders have become a sort of symbol of these regressive long-rooted dynamics in the job market, made even more explicit by digitization and the transition to the platform paradigm. They have also become a paradigmatic case in terms of collective action. This chapter presents the experience of Consegne Etiche, a cooperative home-delivery service founded in 2020 in Bologna. This service was promoted by the Municipality of Bologna with the collaboration of the rider movement such as RUB as an alternative model to multinational food-delivery platforms to provide a substantial solution to the condition of riders and generate positive political pressure to transform the sector of urban logistics. The chapter analyzes the genesis of this experience and the peculiarities of its organizational and governance model but also the limits and criticalities in terms of social impact.
