From civilizationism to the civilizational imaginary: the inter-civilizational perspective in global theorizing
Ino Rossi
Chapter 11 in A Modern Guide to Globalization, 2025, pp 258-288 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapter begins with a review of various forms of civilizationism in the domestic and international political spheres, which is contrasted with the classical comparative-study of civilizations by historians, social scientists, philosophers and literary scholars. Interdisciplinary principles of comparative analysis are integrated and developed for the inter-civilizational study on similarities and complementarities in the deep structures of core civilizational values. The inter-civilizational perspective is shown to be useful to understand the impact of neoliberal globalization on processes internal to liberal democracies as well as on those regarding the interface between democracies and alternative political forms of government.
