Abstract:
This chapter will first discuss the impacts of the recent COVID-19 pandemic on the economy, followed by a brief overview of SMEs in Malaysia. Next, it will review the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis by examining the impact it had on Malaysian SMEs, and the elicited policy responses. It will also discuss the impact of the 2007-2008 Financial Crisis on the Malaysian economy and SMEs, as well as the business and policy responses to minimize its negative effects and recover the economy. The next section will revisit early evidence of the current COVID-19 pandemic on the Malaysian economy, with a focus on SMEs. Lastly, government policy responses will be discussed. The chapter will conclude with a brief discussion on the possible strategies to adopt for economic recovery and to foster SME resilience.
