Eurasian connectivity

Chapter 5 in The Asian Infrastructure System, 2026, pp 102-125 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the limited progress that has been made towards infrastructural integration across the Eurasian region. The focus of the analysis within this chapter is on the states that are members of the EAEU. These are five states of the former Soviet Union. This is largely a Russian-led system of states where progress towards formal integration has been limited, largely due to the reluctance of some states to fall once again into Russia's orbit of control. As a result, formal integration of national infrastructure has been minimal, with much interconnectivity based on long-standing Soviet links, especially within the energy sector. Thus, much of the action with regard to formal integration has involved the alignment of soft infrastructure systems. The sub-region has been a major focus of the Belt and Road Initiative, as the area is a major conduit for the main overland routes from China. However, its effects to date have been muted.
