Introduction to the Handbook of Research on Economic Freedom

Niclas Berggren

Chapter 1 in Handbook of Research on Economic Freedom, 2024, pp 1-14 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Research on economic freedom has expanded greatly in recent years, comprising studies both on determinants and consequences of economic freedom. This is an empirical field within economics that uses various indicators of the degree to which an economy is market-oriented. Most such indicators build on expert surveys, and the most commonly used in academia is the Economic Freedom of the World index, although there are others. This Handbook is the first book-length exposition of research on economic freedom. Its 27 chapters contain up-to-date overviews of the most important subfields, detailing where the research frontiers are and what the shortcomings and opportunities for further research are. Some chapters provide new empirical contributions as well. For anyone interested in policies and institutions shaping an economy in a pro-market direction, this Handbook, and this introductory chapter, is the place to start.
