Chapter 10 in Handbook of Research on Economic Freedom, 2024, pp 133-143 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter revisits the relationship between democracy and economic freedom and replicates and updates the seminal study in this literature. Specifically, we test whether the initial level of democracy in a country influences changes in economic freedom in a panel of 102 countries between 1975 and 2020. Although our results are less robust than those in the original study, they seem to support a positive influence of democracy on economic freedom in non-OECD countries.
