Economic freedom and the economic effects of crises
Jamie Bologna Pavlik
Chapter 22 in Handbook of Research on Economic Freedom, 2024, pp 330-342 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Economic freedom has been shown to be fundamental to economic growth and development. It has also been shown to be an important factor in mitigating the negative economic fallout associated with a variety of crisis types (e.g., pandemic, financial, and natural disasters). Economic freedom creates an environment that is conducive to entrepreneurship and gives individuals the flexibility necessary to react to crisis situations. This chapter reviews the existing literature on this topic and offers some preliminary evidence concerning the economic impact of COVID-19. Understanding economic freedom’s role in COVID-19 related recovery is an interesting area for future research.
