Economic Freedom of the World in the universe of measuring institutions
Ryan H. Murphy
Chapter 3 in Handbook of Research on Economic Freedom, 2024, pp 31-45 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
There are numerous measures of institutional quality, among them Economic Freedom of the World. This chapter situates Economic Freedom of the World among these measures. There are other measures of economic freedom which focus on other points in time or subregions within countries. But there is also overlap between Economic Freedom of the World and other measures of institutional quality that are different conceptually, such as globalization, the rule of law, the business environment, and even certain measures of democracy. The depth of data now available for researchers now allows one to test hypotheses concerning economic freedom and institutional quality in a variety of nuanced ways.
