Economic freedom in the Freiburg and Austrian schools

Abstract: Economic freedom plays a decisive role in both the Freiburg school and the Austrian school. Owing to the different theoretical traditions, the lines of argumentation also vary. The Freiburg school refers to Kant’s moral philosophy and connects Kant with Adam Smith, linking the theory with the interpretation of various epochs of German economic history. The Austrian school since Hayek refers to an evolutionary understanding of the civilization process. Both schools overlap strongly in their political conclusions. In recent decades, the followers of the Freiburg school have also taken up Hayek’s theoretical approach of spontaneous order and further developed it theoretically and in terms of economic policy applications.
