Fintech: what is in a definition?

.

Chapter 1 in Fintech, 2022, pp 1-17 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: While technology has always been an integral part of the financial services sector, the term "fintech" has only become widely used in the past few years. Tens of definitions have been suggested for fintech, with reference to technology, industry, companies and ideas, but no "perfect definition" exists. The definitions emphasise various aspects of the phenomenon: the application of IT in finance, start-ups, new technologies, new companies, digitalisation, new markets, new business models, new generation, battle between old and new, change of processes, etc. The word "fintech" may be used to refer to technological applications in finance or the industry utilising technology in the provision of financial services, which may or may not include traditional financial institutions.
