The benefits and costs of fintech

.

Chapter 5 in Fintech, 2022, pp 81-104 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The perceived advantages of fintech stem from the observation that it can enhance the financial services industry in many ways: by providing a better customer experience, strengthening critical infrastructure components, boosting access to the financial system, realising efficiencies, and reducing costs for market participants and the investing public. For all of these benefits, however, fintech may also produce negative consequences, such as exacerbating cyber-security threats and amplifying third-party risks. The desirability of going all the way with fintech rests on a comparison of costs and benefits, which is also true of technology in general.
