Sustainability and internationalization in emerging market firms: two sides of the same coin

Ana Maria Gomez-Trujillo and Maria Alejandra Gonzalez-Perez

Chapter 23 in Research Handbook on International Corporate Social Responsibility, 2023, pp 354-375 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Compared to firms from developed countries, firms from emerging economies face additional liabilities that they must overcome when competing with global players. The firm’s voluntary participation in social and environmental initiatives has been one of the mechanisms for building legitimacy domestically and in host markets. Do companies incorporate sustainability into their internationalization strategy? Or do businesses incorporate internationalization into their long-term strategy to ensure long-term viability? There is some evidence that internationalization is a driver of sustainability. This chapter examines how internationalization and sustainability are two sides of the same coin for companies looking to improve their market positioning and long-term leadership.
