COVID-19 and the decline of volunteers in Australian community sport: solutions to move forward

Abstract: The unprecedented times resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic impacted sport in Australia, particularly traditional volunteering in community sport. Government legislation on social distancing and the cancellation or postponement of community sport, triggered by COVID-19, threatened the practice of volunteerism. The purpose of this chapter is to provide solutions to address declining volunteer levels in Australian community sport in a post-COVID-19 world. The discussion includes factors such as what the sports administrators might do to increase levels of volunteering and ways in which the Australian government can offer support to a sector that was already under-resourced and under-funded. Further, there is consideration of the importance of partnerships alongside incentives for volunteers, the role of digital media, the relevance of health and wellbeing, and finally, the overall volunteer dynamic
