Chapter 3 in Research Handbook on Sport and COVID-19, 2022, pp 19-30 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Sport has been one of the hardest hit sectors during the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, and while high-performance sport is being addressed from multiple perspectives, probably since international sport events such as the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, or worldwide professional leagues were cancelled or postponed in 2020, the effects of the pandemic on amateur sport have been put on the back burner. However, if we consider the large number of athletes who practice sport at a non-professional level, and the benefits associated with such practice, it can be understood that the effects of COVID-19 goes beyond this, affecting public health, and with numerous physical, mental, and social consequences. Moreover, the sports market and organizations have endured direct financial consequences during this pandemic, as numerous mass sports events have been cancelled due to the difficulty in maintaining social distancing and to prevent transmission. Therefore, addressing the real impact of COVID-19 on amateur sport seems indispensable in terms of redressing the current consequences and establishing prevention strategies for the future.
